I've been a fan of One Piece for years, so going back to read the early volumes of the manga was supposed to help solidify why I enjoyed the series so much. There were moments where I found myself back into that state of bliss from years before, but others were I felt myself question my judgment. That's not to say I hate the series now. The opposite, I still love One Piece, but the first volume really caught me off guard. I guess the main thing for me is that it's weird to see Luffy in the early stages of One Piece. It's hard to see his fully developed personality from this first impression and it makes him a little harder for me to like. Having Luffy's past in the very first chapter sent me for a loop as well. Then, after the first chapter, just having ten years pass was kind of weird. The pacing in the first two chapters made me waver a little. Then he met Zoro and the story seemed to be set right again. The main problem I have with the first volume is the story. There's no real conflict in the story right now. I just feel like I'm following the characters into a mindless story with no real plot. If I didn't know One Piece better, I'd be concerned that the story would fall into a strange plot of humor and no real conflict. I would recommend One Piece to people, but the first volume is not strong at all. It does get better, from what I remember.
